Dallas Mavericks Team News

Size matters in the NBA, but that doesn’t always mean bigger is better. Small is a size, too.

And when it comes to lineups, Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle believes in diversity. Yes, he likes to have big men in the game. Most NBA champions have a strong inside presence.

But he also likes to use a three-guard lineup and has done so frequently in the preseason, especially with J.J. Barea occupying one of the spots. The 6-foot Puerto Rican has played 80 minutes in the three exhibitions, behind only Dirk Nowitzki (81 minutes) and Jason Kidd (83).

Barea’s been on the court with Kidd and either Jason Terry or rookie Roddy Beaubois a lot.

“I love it,” Barea says. “I love playing with point guards at the same time. It makes the job a lot easier for all of us. It gets the ball moving, and I like that.”

Until Beaubois gains some experience, Barea figures to keep the job of backing up Kidd. But it can be argued that he’s at his best when playing with Kidd, which allows Barea to look for his shot more. Throw in Terry and the smallish backcourt instantly gives the Mavericks plenty of offense in support of Nowitzki, Shawn Marion or whoever else is on the floor.

Dallas Mavericks Sign Drew Gooden

July 27, 2009

Hornets Spurs Basketball

AP source: Gooden says he’s headed to Dallas

A source close to the negotiations tells The Associated Press that the Dallas Mavericks have reached an agreement with free agent big man Drew Gooden(notes).

The source, who did not wish to be identified because a contract hasn’t been signed yet, said Monday that the deal is “verbally done.”

Gooden said on his Twitter page Monday that he had three deciding factors in his decision to join the Mavs: winning, playing time and money. He wrote: “Dallas is the team!”

Owner Mark Cuban did not return an email seeking confirmation of the deal, but did post “Welcome Drew” on his Twitter page.

Gooden, 27, played in 19 games for the San Antonio Spurs last year, averaging 9.8 points and 4.4 rebounds. The 6-foot-10 Gooden averages 12 points and 7.9 rebounds and will help a frontcourt that lost Brandon Bass(notes) to free agency.

The Mavs would be his seventh team.

Stephan Marbury Breaks Down on JustinTV

more about “Stephon Marbury Crying Because…“, posted with vodpod

Marbury’s career becoming world-wide waste

As Stephon Marbury clung to that camera for most of those 24 hours, a lost soul spiraling within a voyeuristic ‘net culture, one longtime associate kept logging in and out of the video chat Friday and into Saturday morning.

“He’s lonely,” he told me. “This is sad to watch. I feel for him. Money doesn’t buy happiness.”

This is someone who has worked with Marbury in the past, who likes him and thinks there’s a lot of good amid the confusion and turmoil. Marbury is no longer an All-Star basketball player, but a journeyman trying to turn his fading fame into counterculture basketball celebrity. As his talent has rapidly decayed, his career bottomed out, Starbury’s appeal has been relegated to that of a peep show on the Internet. He’s turned himself into the radio station that you hear in the back of a taxi at 2 a.m.

Mark Cuban Lawsuit Basketball

Suit accuses Mavericks owner of diverting profits; Judge tosses out SEC suit against Mark Cuban

Suit accuses Mavericks owner of diverting profits

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is accused of wrongfully diverting millions of dollars from the NBA franchise’s home arena to help make up for cash shortfalls incurred by the team, according to a lawsuit filed by a company controlled by the team’s former owner.

The lawsuit claims Cuban covered the Mavericks’ financial shortfalls by obtaining more than $29 million in unauthorized loans through a limited partnership designed to distribute profits from the arena, the American Airlines Center. It accuses the Mavericks and three other companies controlled by Cuban of breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty and unjust enrichment.

The company that filed the suit, Hillwood Center Partners, is controlled by former Mavericks owner Ross Perot Jr. and holds a small interest in the arena’s limited partnership, Radical Arena. A related Perot company sold the Mavericks to Cuban in 2000.

Judge tosses out SEC suit against Mark Cuban

A federal judge has tossed out the Securities and Exchange Commission’s insider-trading suit against Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, dealing a stunning defeat to the nation’s securities cop in one of its highest-profile civil actions.

Chief Judge Sidney Fitzwater of Dallas said in a 35-page ruling released Friday that the SEC had failed to prove that Cuban entered into a legal agreement not to trade stock in the search engine firm Mamma.com Inc. after learning nonpublic information about the company’s plans to raise more money.

“The judge stopped this fight in the first round,” said Paul Coggins, a former U.S. attorney who defended the billionaire. He noted that a federal judge’s agreement to dismiss such a suit this early in the process was quite rare.

Mavs Talk To Lamar Odom – And Yes, We’ve Amateur-GM’ed Our Way To A Trade Scenario

Mavs owner Mark Cuban, in a Monday night interview on NBA TV, said that Dallas has been in contact with the agent for Lakers free agent Lamar Odom.

“There are a lot of guys who haven’t been signed,’’ Cuban told David Aldridge, “so we’re talking to everybody. We’re talking to Lamar Odom’s agent in case he decides not to go back to LA. … which, who knows if there’s an opportunity there. …’’

BREAKING: Mavs Inching Closer On Marion

We have it on good authority that Toronto and Dallas are making real progress this morning on the Marion talks. Working on the assumption that our good authority is good. …

With the Mavs utilizing The Stack Chip in exchange for Marion (or, for the sake of the coming exercise, something), the roster will be hopefully overflowing with talent.

But it’ll also be overflowing with bodies.

Bryant on brink of closing out fourth championship

All the anger, all the ferocity that had filled Kobe Bryant(notes) for the past week – the clenched-jaw seriousness he brought to these NBA Finals – seemed to melt away by the step as he made the slow walk to the Amway Arena loading dock early Friday. A few Orlando Magic players continued to linger in the hallway an hour after their crushing loss, and Bryant’s face brightened at the sight of Mickael Pietrus(notes).
