Cowboys Win in Overtime

October 14, 2009

Cowboys Chiefs Football

Austin only saved the season and some jobs (but just wait)

A season nearly died here Sunday, but even after his team ended up buying life-support time, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made a murky point clear:

The smell of lingering football rot, he says, won’t change a made-up mind.

“No,” Jones said, emphatically, then added with a smile, “and you will not trap me on that one.”

That answer was in reference to what might had been on Monday if the Cowboys hadn’t managed — in overtime, and with a Miles Austin miracle afternoon — to finally subdue an opponent that has now lost 28 of its last 30 NFL games, a futility record for the books.

Fire Wade Phillips? Jason Garrett? Himself as general manager?

Jerry, as the Valley Ranch boss of bosses, was spared, probably temporarily, from having to deal with any of those pertinent queries, once the Cowboys had stumbled and bumbled and gone many Miles out of the way to beat the gawd-awful Kansas City Chiefs 26-20 in OT.

Cowboys Win – Defense Comes Up Big

Cowboys’ D leads the way to 21-7 win over Panthers

Leading, but not by much, Tony Romo(notes) and the Dallas Cowboys were desperately in need of a big play.

Jake Delhomme(notes) helped them make several.

Terence Newman(notes) returned an interception 27 yards for a lead-stretching touchdown with 5:07 left, then rookie linebacker Victor Butler(notes) got two sacks and forced a fumble on the next series, sending Dallas to a 21-7 victory over the Carolina Panthers on Monday night.

Considering the Cowboys were coming off a last-second loss in the opener of their $1.15 billion stadium, a crowd of 90,588 was especially tense until the defense put the game away. The biggest sigh of relief likely came from team owner Jerry Jones.

Romo’s Dallas Cowboys Win in Tampa Bay

September 15, 2009

Bradie James tossed and turned much of the night, unable to sleep. So did Ken Hamlin.

Each blamed the Cowboys’ raggedy defensive performance against Tampa Bay for their sleepless night.

Even Wade Phillips, who believes in the power of positive thinking to a fault, said three times during his 17-minute news conference Monday afternoon that he wasn’t satisfied with the Cowboys’ defensive performance against Tampa Bay.

This is good. Really good.

This should make you pop the cork on the champagne you’ve been saving for just the right occasion, or take your significant other to Al Biernat’s for dinner.

Dallas Cowboys vs. San Fransisco 49ers Preseason Game 3 preview

Niners coach Mike Singletary named the veteran quarterback his starter this week over Alex Smith and Hill figures to get most of the playing time against the Cowboys. After scuffling a bit in his last preseason game vs. Oakland, Hill can now play more freely knowing he has the starting job locked up. If he falls on his face, he could make the Niners coaching staff — and fans, alike — wonder if the correct decision was made.

There were a lot of positives for the Cowboys in their rout of the Titans last week, but one concern is the amount of penalties the team committed. Thirteen flags were thrown on Dallas to the tune of 113 yards — not a habit the Cowboys want to pick up as the regular season creeps closer.

Dallas Cowboys/Tony Romo Season Preview

August 26, 2009

Tony Romo Is Ready To Lead The Dallas Cowboys, But To Where?

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo sure is prepping himself to be the true leader of this dysfunctional football team.

There’s a lot of talent on this team, and there has been since Romo starting take snaps full-time for the Cowboys in 2006.

He’s ditched his blonde bimbo girlfriend. He’s playing excellent football in preseason, with a QB rating of 105. He hasn’t had any turnovers. And he’s got Felix Jones behind him, a player who is really starting to grab attention as a true playmaker comparable to former running back Tony Dorsett.

The Cowboys desperately need a leader and Troy Aikman and Michael Irvin played that role well during the heydays of the 1990s.

This is the year Romo has to make strides, leaps and bounds over what he has done in the previous 2 1/2 years. With a triple backfield of runners who could start on almost any team, and a group of wide receivers, many of whom are hungry to compete, along with two tight ends who can catch the ball and gains yards after the catch, and it sounds like a recipe for wins.

But the Cowboys also seem to flop in December. That’s where Tony Romo comes in. That’s when he really needs to step up.

Let’s hope he does.

Jessica Simpson Puts Hex On Cowboys

August 25, 2009

jessicasimpson

Alas, though Simpson is no longer in Romo’s life, she has seen fit to destroy your season anyway, Cowboys fans.

The National Enquirer reports that Simpson met a witch online (You might say she was… eWitched. Huh? Huh?), and hired her to put a hex on Romo’s love life AND his play with the Cowboys this year.

A source told National Enquirer magazine: “Jessica is normally a really sweet girl, but she still can’t believe Tony callously dumped her.”

“She found a woman in California. The two met at the star’s Beverly Hills home where they lit a candle, burned some incense and performed a couple of incantations.”

I have a text of that incantation:

ROMO, LOBO, MAJORDOMO… EYE OF NEWT AND WART OF HOG, WHEN THE BIG GAME COMES, MAY TONY LAY A LOG…

Depth Concern for Cowboys After Opening Preseason

August 15, 2009

Depth concern for Cowboys after opening preseason

There will be a different sense for the Dallas Cowboys when they get back to practice in the Alamodome. Especially for the non-starters.

One preseason game can change the perception of things.

“You can start plays over at practice. It’s different in games, you can’t start plays over,” linebacker Bradie James aid after the Cowboys lost their preseason opener 31-10 at Oakland. “When they get coached this week, they’ll understand. It will set in.”

Tony Romo and the No. 1 offense played two drives, following an opening three-and-out Thursday night with a nine-play touchdown drive in which six different players ran or caught the ball.

Yahoo! ‘Inside Slant’- Cowboys team report

Most projections of the Cowboys’ 2009 season have been hitched to one man-sized qualifier. Pundits aren’t punching the Dallas ballot until they can clearly decipher how effective the Cowboys are in their collective effort to replace receiver Terrell Owens(notes).

There has been much conjecture about whether Roy Williams, acquired last October from Detroit for a package including first- and third-round draft picks, is truly a No. 1 receiver and if young receivers such as Miles Austin(notes) and Sam Hurd(notes) can step up to become regular contributors in the passing offense.

Offseason Turnover

After news reports about a 2007 shooting allegation surfaced, the Cowboys released talented but controversial starting cornerback Adam Jones on February 9, 2009.[2] Their next move was to release backup quarterback Brad Johnson on February 26, 2009 and to not re-sign QB Brooks Bollinger.[3] The Cowboys had been 1-3 when Johnson started in 2008. Two days later, the Cowboys traded starting cornerback Anthony Henry, age 32, to the Detroit Lions in exchange for quarterback John Kitna to back up starting quarterback Tony Romo.[4] The same day the team signed five-time Pro Bowl, two-time second-team All-Pro linebacker Keith Brooking away from the Atlanta Falcons.[5] The 33-year-old Brooking had led the Falcons in sacks the previous eight seasons, and he signed a three-year deal worth $7.8 million and includes $2.5 million guaranteed.[6]

The team lost starting defensive end Chris Canty to the New York Giants on March 1, 2009.[7] To fill the need left by Canty’s departure, the team signed former Chargers defensive end Igor Olshansky to a four-year, $18 million contract, with $8 million guaranteed on March 6, 2009.[8] Linebacker Matt Stewart, who played for Wade Phillips in Atlanta, and had 108 tackles in 2003, signed a one-year contract on March 3, 2009.[9] Stewart helped replace free-agent linebacker Kevin Burnett, who signed a two-year contract worth $5.5 million with a $2 million signing bonus to play for the San Diego Chargers.[10]

On March 4, 2009, the Cowboys cut Terrell Owens, a five-time All-Pro wide receiver who ranks second in NFL history in career touchdowns.[11] The next morning, the team also released five-time Pro Bowl strong safety Roy Williams. Williams had struggled to excel in the 3-4 defense Phillips installed when he became head coach.[12] The Cowboys bolstered its secondary in the wake of Willaims’ departure by signing strong safety Gerald Sensabaugh, who started 13 games in 2008 for the Jacksonville Jaguars, to a one-year, $1.75 million deal.[10]

In April, the Cowboys addressed their restricted free agents, whose signing period ran through April 17, 2009.[13] Offensive lineman Cory Procter signed a one-year tender offer on April 4, 2009.[14] Defensive end Stephen Bowen also signed a tender offer two days later.[15] Wide receiver Sam Hurd signed a one-year offer worth $1.545 million on April 20, 2009.[13] The team signed their final restricted free agent, wide receiver Miles Austin, and both exclusive-rights free agents, running back Alonzo Coleman and tight end Rodney Hannah, to one-year contracts worth $1.54 million, $385,000, and $310,000 respectively on April 23, 2009.[16]

The team released thirty-four year-old, Pro-Bowl defensive end Greg Ellis on June 2, 2009. The move saved the Cowboys $4.15 million.
